Ready to make the smart choice?
SmartShelters is a trusted name in the design and manufacture of durable, engineered fabric-clad shelters across NZ. With 110 years of experience, we deliver proven shelter solutions for the agricultural, commercial, and industrial markets — each one customised to your site, built to withstand the elements, and backed by New Zealand’s longest shelter warranty.
From livestock housing and composting barns to warehousing, aviation storage, and construction compounds, our shelters are designed to protect what matters. Each structure uses premium-grade materials, modular construction, and SmartShield® cladding — a world-class fabric engineered to perform in extreme weather conditions while allowing natural light and airflow.
Unlike off-the-shelf or temporary shelters, a SmartShelter is a complete system — fully engineered, relocatable, and tailored to your operational needs. Designed and made in NZ, we don’t import — we build to last, for New Zealand conditions.
Make the smart choice for your farm.
Your assets, be they livestock, machinery, feed or a harvest, need to be protected. At SmartShelters we have 100 years of experience in building farm sheds and other industrial shelters for uniquely New Zealand conditions. Our shelter add ons are built to the highest quality and help you go the extra step to securing the best possible shelter on the market.
Our shelters are typically utilised to house livestock, hay, equipment, and vehicles. They’re also suitable for warehousing, construction compounds, off-site manufacturing, and various other commercial and agricultural purposes.
Yes, most SmartShelters require consent. We can assist with design documentation and can lodge consent on your behalf.
Costs vary depending on size, materials, mounting method and location (some high wind zones will need extra engineering). Posts are generally cheaper than containers, but installation costs for posts are usually much higher than container mounted shelters. Request a quote for tailored pricing.
Shelter widths range from 6m to 45m, with any length available. We have standard side and arch heights, but it can be customised based on use and clearance requirements. We do have set sizes, but we specialize in designing and manufacturing shelters according to your specific needs.

Absolutely. Many of our shelters are relocatable, allowing you to disassemble and reinstall them on new sites. This flexibility helps spread capital cost over multiple projects.
Yes, Composting barns deliver strong sustainability gains for both herd health and the land. The aerated bedding breaks down into nutrient-rich compost, which can be spread directly onto pastures to cut fertiliser costs and reduce nutrient loss. With cows indoors, paddocks are protected from trampling during wet months, so soil structure is preserved and grass growth recovers faster in spring.
Healthier conditions for stock are also part of the benefit. Cows housed on dry composting bedding face fewer illness issues, and calves are less likely to die in adverse weather — reducing losses while improving overall welfare. By combining better effluent management with healthier herds, composting barns support more sustainable, profitable farming.
Yes. SmartShelters’ commercial range is built with sustainability in mind. Our SmartShield® fabric is PVC-free, and natural light reduces the need for artificial lighting, lowering costs. Covering bulk materials, such as lime, can also cut processing energy and coal use.
Container mounted shelters minimise embodied carbon by using less concrete and steel than traditional buildings and often repurpose end-of-life containers. Quick, low-impact installation further reduces manpower, resources and emissions, making these shelters a practical, lower-carbon choice for industrial and commercial operations.
Yes. We offer container devanning shelters as well as gap span beams — long, heavy-duty beams that span the gap between two shipping containers. These create a strong overhead frame for attaching shelter covers without needing extra poles in the middle, keeping the loading bay wide open. Combined with open-access bays, this design enables faster and safer loading, unloading, and logistics operations.
